Might as well shut down PDRM, says Ramasamy

Seeing red with the men in blue, Penang Deputy Chief Minister P Ramasamy has suggested that the police department be closed down.

The DAP leader was responding to Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar's justification of police inaction in the custody dispute involving a Hindu woman and her Muslim convert ex-husband.

"If the police cannot protect the victim, they might as well shut down the police department," Ramasamy told a press conference today.

S Deepa was granted custody of her two children by the Seremban High Court last Monday.

But two days later, her ex-husband Izwan Abdullah snatched their six-year-old son and allegedly assaulted the 30-year-old clerk when she attempted to stop him from driving away.

Despite a police report being lodged, Khalid said no action would be taken because the syariah court had granted Izwan custody as well.

Ramasamy also took Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to task for defending the police chief over this matter.

Unfit for their posts

Earlier, the deputy chief minister said Zahid and Khalid were unfit for their posts and described them as "thugs" for allowing cases of custodial deaths to continue.

"Zahid is not only unfit to be home minister but he has the makings of a gangster.

"We respect the police and we want to work closely with the force but we cannot tolerate deaths in custody, we want those responsible to be hauled up for action.

"Those who die in custody are often the poor and marginalised, whose families have no one to turn to and have no proper safety net or protection," Ramasamy added.

He said this in reaction to the death of labourer Murugan Muniandy, 37, at the Seberang Jaya Hospital on April 13, after he was detained on March 31 on suspicion of drug possession.

This is the fifth such case this year, and the second involving the Seberang Perai Tengah police headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam.

On another matter, Ramasamy also criticised Khalid for declining to reveal further information on the kidnapping of two women from a resort off Sabah and Zahid for offering RM501 to ex-Sabah chief minister Yong Teck Lee to slap him.

Apart from this, he said the police chief also gave inconclusive and contradictory statements regarding the investigation into the missing Flight MH370.

"That is why we seriously need the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) because we do not expect the police to investigate themselves," Ramasamy added.

However, the government has said there was no need for the IPCMC due to the formation of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission in 2009.
